Athletic Training

A guide to resources and materials for research in Athletic Training

What is it?

Evidence-Based practice is derived from the concept of evidence-based medicine (EBM) which is defined as follows:

"Evidence based medicine is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research."

David L Sackett, William M C Rosenberg, J A Muir Gray, R Brian Haynes, W Scott Richardson.  Evidence based medicine: what it is and what it isn't.  BMJ 1996;312:71-72 (13 January).

Where to find research that includes Evidence-Based Practice

Here are some places you can go to find research on using evidence-based practice (EBP):

SportDiscus with Full Text: use your keywords (ex. ankle injur*) with the subject heading (descriptor)  "Evidence-based medicine"

Medline with Full Text: Select the "EBM Reviews" limiter from the options under "Limit Your Results" underneath "Search Options" on your search page. This will show you EBP reviews from Cochrane (we don't have this so you would need to request from ILL)

Tip: You can also limit your search in by selecting things like meta-analysis review, randomized controlled, trial under the "Publications Type" limiter or use the different evidence-based MESH Headings found in the Medline Thesaurus (MESH tab on top of the search screen)

PubMed: Use the "Clinical Queries" link under PubMEd Tools to search for specific types of studies or systematic reviews.
